KarmYog Vatika at the MLC residence in Patna, illuminated at dusk with a rooftop garden and warm lighting

A garden, made from listening.

Patna, 2023. A residence in the Bihar Legislative Council quarters, transformed into a living Vatika by Mahacharya Sourabh J Sarkar and dozens of artisans. Two months of work. One way of living, made visible.

The Philosophy

What is a KarmYog Vatika

A KarmYog Vatika is not landscaping. It is a way of living with plants, light, and craft — a place where nature, learning, and livelihood meet on the same patch of ground. Conceived by Mahacharya Sourabh J Sarkar, biophilic pioneer and founder of the KarmYog for 21st Century Movement, the Vatika is built to be lived in, not looked at. Each one is shaped to its site. Each one connects the people who use it to the people who grew, gathered, and shaped what’s in it.

Inaugurated November 2023 at the MLC residence of Shri Sachchidanand Rai, by Hon. Devesh Chandra Thakur, President of the Bihar Legislative Council.

The Transformation

From ground to grove

The lawn before — basic potted palms, overgrown path, bare concrete

The lawn, before.

The lawn now — bamboo canopy with coconut shell curtain, raised flower bed, artificial grass, potted plants on steps

The lawn, now.

The Living Palette

Built from the land it sits on

Every KarmYog Vatika is built from materials that breathe, age, and belong to the ground they stand on. No concrete planters. No plastic trellises. The palette is living.

Bundles of raw Ganga Bamboo stacked and tied, ready for construction

Ganga Bamboo

The structural backbone. Harvested from the Gangetic plains of Bihar, these thick, resilient poles form the Vatika’s columns, canopy framework, and planter structures. Each pole hand-selected for strength and grain.

Assam Bamboo

The craftsperson’s material. Finer, more flexible bamboo from the Northeast, split and woven by hand into lattice jali panels, planter racks, and decorative screens. Every pattern is handmade.

Cloth & Textile

The finishing layer. Traditional fabrics in deep reds and pinks drape the bamboo canopy and line the building facade. Coconut shell curtains hang from the beams, filtering light and adding warmth.

The Making

Two months. Dozens of hands.

The 3D vision came first — a careful map of how the space would breathe. Then came the artisans. Each plant chosen for the soil and light it would meet. Each bamboo joint hand-bound. A KarmYog Vatika is what happens when a designer’s drawing meets a craftsperson’s hand — and they agree.
